"Care for the environment is an important part of our business strategy. Our environmental policy includes commitments to review the performance of every aspect of our production process on an ongoing basis."
Esk Building Products produces calcium silicate bricks that are genuinely environmentally friendly when compared to most normal fired clay methods of brick manufacture.
"they will be suitable for use in WISE and are an improvement environmentally on traditional fired clay"
Wales Institute for Sustainable Education WISE
Manufacturing of calcium silicate bricks requires approximately a third of the energy used in the production of clay fired bricks. In terms of emissions during the manufacturing process the main emission is water vapour (steam) unlike the possibly toxic emissions of clay fired brick production where serious pollutants eg. fluorides, chlorides and oxides of sulphur and nitrogen can be discharged due to impurities released from the bricks during firing.
Recycling - old, reclaimed or sub-standard bricks can be crushed and incorporated into new bricks, without any compromises in the quality of the brick.
Bricks made from calcium silicate are usable both externally and internally, unlike many alternative eco-friendly brick products, which tend to be for internal use only. They are also the ideal solution for use below the damp-proof course where sulphates in the soil or water exists, as calcium silicate bricks are practically free from soluble salts.
Environmentally friendly products are a requirement for most building projects in this day and age. Architects, builders and planners require products that satisfy not only the Building Standards, but the overall effect of products on our ecology. Esk bricks satisfy in each area.
