Manufacturing of calcium silicate bricks on the site of Esk Building Products has been continuous since 1937, initially as part of the John Laing Building and Construction Group. The business was sold to a management buy out and subsequently taken over by Wimpey Asphalt (Wimpey Plc) in 1992. Ownership transferred to Tarmac Plc in late 1995, as a small part of a major asset swap between Wimpey Plc and Tarmac Plc. The business is now under new ownership with a highly skilled and experienced management team, including one of the most respected figures in the calcium silicate manufacturing business, John Saunders.

Esk Building Products is an independent business and the only calcium silicate (sandlime) facing brick manufacturer in the UK. The product range includes facing and common bricks, in a large selection of colours, various strengths and three textures. From 2008 Esk Building Products will supply calcium silicate blocks. This fast track thin joint block system is ideal for rapid building construction to very high standards and is well established and widely used throughout Europe.

In addition bricks can be manufactured in many custom sizes and colours. The custom colour service can provide exclusivity for a specially created colour used for a particular project. This service allows architects, builders and designers the unique facility to specify bricks of almost any colour they require.

Calcium silicate products are the ideal building solution in these environmentally conscious times, requiring about one-third of the energy used in clay brick production. Discharge into the environment during the production process is also of minimal impact, the main discharge being steam, whereas the production of normal clay bricks typically generates some possibly toxic emissions.
